Portopalo di Menfi is an ancient fishermen's town, today is one of the most important seaside resorts of the district. It is a group of houses and installations distributed on a rocky elevation. It was one of the many secular recognition towers that, with signs of smoke by day and with fires at night, warned about eventual attacks of the Turkish piracy, present in the Mediterranean sea during the XVI sec. The port, old arrival point of the Greeks to Selinunte, served to the commercial functions of a vast area of cereal farmers. Testimony of such trafficis are the so many underwater recoveries and particularly a wreckage of a

Roman honorary ship,  shipwrecked between the I and the II sec. B.C. in the area of the current West jetty. Around the year 840 the land was denominated "Tirsat Abi Tawar", that is rock-cliff of Abi Tawar. This last one seems was the gentleman of the place to which is linked the queen's legend that says she used to take the bathroom undressed in the cala, during full moon nights. Still today the place carries the significant name of "Cuenca of the Regina".
